Tscharke Girl Talk Savagnin 2009
Not only did the 2009 vintage represent a change in the official identity of the grape varietal, it also represented a tweak in winemaking for Girl Talk. It still has the concentrated ripe nose. This time, of pear, tropical fruit with lighter lychee scent with some limestone to give it some aromatic backbone with a whiff of perfume to finish (I did spend a lot of time just swirling and sniffing this wine because it was so delightfully aromatic). It is still a dry and fuller bodied wine but being a hot ripe Barossa summer has produced a slightly softer but refreshing acid structure. The flavours are tropical lychee and pear with some spice, rather different from the more creamy 2008 which had 5 months on lees. Definitely worth seeking out for warm evenings – and definitely not limited to ‘Girls’.
