Tandem Ars Nova Tempranillo Cabernet Merlot 2005

One of the brands in Spain making modern reds that still have some traditional aged roots such as this blend of the Spanish superstar Tempranillo blended with the Bordeaux greats Cabernet and Merlot.

A rich wine that offers plenty by way of interest in its middle age with dominant tannins, a fuller body and medium length. There are attractive dried rose and tobacco notes to the red plum and fresh red currant fruit. You do get the feeling that you have taken it out of the cellar a tad too early. Drink it with a smoky Paella and enjoy it now it is open.

Gemtree Vineyards Luna Roja Tempranillo 2010

The story of Luna Roja is the story of Spain meets McLaren Vale.  Gemtree is the Buttery family’s biodynamic vineyard in the McLaren Vale and this tempranillo is full of character and texture.  The nose of dried rose petals, sweet exotic spice and red plums is very attractive.

Very silky, juicy and so elegantly supple and medium body and long finish.  Give some breathing space and it will reward you. Step up and see what a great food wine looks like although it is also seriously delicious without food.

Angullong Bull’s Roar Tempranillo 2010

Originally from Spain, Tempranillo is one of the newer grape varieties that are capturing our attention by producing sleek food friendly wines. This Spaniard is most welcome providing a stylishly brooding alternative to our bigger, more boisterous Aussie reds.

Tempranillo is but one of the ‘alternative varietals’ in Angullong’s vineyard or perhaps  I should say …. stud. This wine has quite a story to tell starting with the fact that the 2010 is Angullong’s very first Tempranillo vintage and has gone on to become a multi trophy & gold medal winner already. Not bad indeed considering that 2 years before being grafted with Tempranillo, there was Marsanne growing in that vineyard.

Ripe raspberry & cherry fruit with a spicy charcuterie edge is wrapped in succulent tannins. With its medium body & alcohol it is not so much the rampaging bull, but more of an elegantly clad matador – without the finishing sting of course. Made in an early drinking style, you can even drink it at lunch without needing a siesta.

Alvaro Castro Dao 2009

There is excitement to be found in the wines out of Portugal and this wine from Alvaro Castro is worth grabbing when you see it. It is a red blend made from Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo with a Portuguese accent) plus Alfrocheiro and Jaen (Mencia) varieties from the Dao region.

The spicy black cherry fruit has peppery support and cloves, liquorice and dried herbs grab the attention.  Freshly poured there is a floral highlight which becomes more meaty as it opens up. It is juicy and elegantly bodied and the bright fruit keeps it lively and fresh. Drink it now to capture the pretty brightness with or without food.

Omrah Rose 2012 & Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2012

Two new releases from Omrah sourced from the Great Southern region and with their stylish new labels.

Omrah Rose 2012

A blend of Tempranillo and Shiraz is unusual but it works in this rose. A pale pink in the glass with a personality redolent in ripe strawberries and cherry fruit.  Dry with a lightness of body to match the juicy crispness. The wine finishes with some  savoury garden lavender, leaves and all that will keep you interested in the next mouthful. No one likes a dull rose after all!  A good food wine with a fresh easy drinking for now philosophy.

Omrah Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2012

Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are a blend that the West do well although being sourced from the cool Great Southern region does lift the profile of this wine out of the lush tropical fruit giving it more of a citrus zing.

Fragrantly perfumed pear and ripe grapefruit juice notes lighten the passionfruit and melon charisma in this wine.  A fresh crisp style with a slight crunch in the acid but otherwise has soft and generous fruit. Good for summer drinking and enjoyable to drink even without food.
