Easter – no bunnies here!

After the thrill of Easter eggs and frill of Easter baskets comes the meal to celebrate the spirit of new life.  For some more orthodox religions, this also means the breaking of the fast in a traditional feast with all the trimmings.  Where ever you live, whether Northern or Southern hemisphere the milder weather is welcomed.  Like we just needed another reason to celebrate!

Easter menu’s range from traditional ham, roast pork or lamb with seasonal vegetables to more modern styles.  Don’t forget the seafood/fish feasts for Good Friday (this, I confess, is when we aim to have fish and chips by the beach as a family). Dessert is always the height of anticipation on any celebratory menu and may well be a simnel cake or at least the last slices of it or a simple repast of hot cross buns. These never last long in my house for some reason and perhaps if they did, I would turn them into a bread and butter pudding with a Topaque or Liqueur Muscat sticky caramel sauce.

Whatever your plans, here are a few wine suggestions to make your Easter more memorable …… Read More

McWilliams Morning Light 2009 Botrytis Semillon

There is nothing quite like a little sweetie to finish your meal and refresh your palate. Morning Light 09 is a recent trophy winner in the Sydney Royal Wine Show 2013 and if you are not a fan of dessert wines then one sip of it’s golden depths will make you a convert.

Brazen honeyed ginger marmalade and apricot flows along its sweet length.  Just the right amount of sweetness held tight by the fresh acid at its core. Enjoy with fruity or nutty desserts such as apple tart topped with a dollop of cream with a crunch of hazelnut praline.

Brokenwood Cricket Pitch Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2011

With Brokenwood’s reputation for making such fine Semillons, is it any wonder that the Cricket Pitch is such a fresh zesty wine?  It has been styled to be versatile and it is generous and elegant without giving in to showmanship.

Instead it remains fine with characters of lime, green apple, white peach with a herbal edge.  On the palate it hints at pineapple ripeness with a smidge of cream.  Delightful drinking anytime, anywhere.

Peter Lehmann Barossa Semillon 2010

A fruity style of semillon that has all the hallmarks of summer. Peter Lehmann has a reputation for producing fine semillons that rival the greats from the Hunter and this wine is softer in its approach and represents great value. Dry and crisp with grapefruit zip, lime juice and the light floral notes reminiscent of spring flowers along a mineral backbone.  Well chilled, it is a refreshing drink by itself or drinking with your favourite oysters or scallops.

Pierro Ltc Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2011

The Margaret River produces some of the finest blends of Semillon & Sauvignon Blanc in Australia & this creamy delight from Pierro evokes plenty of smiles with its mmmm factor.  The ‘Ltc’ stands for ‘Little Touch of Chardonnay’, just as the ‘Ltcf’ in the Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot blend stands for ‘Little Touch of Cabernet Franc’. Pierro’s Chardonnay is one of the finest from the Margaret & lends a sense of elegance to the lively mix.

While finely grained, Ltc is not totally about texture as there is plenty of fruit.  With a dollop of cream, there is fresh grapefruit & lemon citrus fruit hinting at peachy ripeness and countered by a whiff of herb savouriness.  The deft addition of that Chardonnay continues to round out the shape of the mouth – no puckering here.

There is something very seductive in the fine silkiness of this wine that lasts along the entire length thanks to the refreshingly natural acid. Particularly after the almost frenetic pace of Summer, this fineness will go a long way to soothing those fraught senses.  A great wine for a warm Autumn afternoon or pairing with a supper of wild mushroom & chestnut soup.
