Matchbox Wine Co Malbec 2012

I am a big fan of Malbec and while there is plenty of Malbec grown in Australia, there are not enough 100% Malbecs produced. Well, get ready to join the bleachers with me  as newly converted fans!  Matchbox Wine Co is a brand shiny new label by unique wine team – Nav & Louise – which launches with some food-loving wines, a more-ish Riesling, an as yet untasted Syrah, & this Malbec.

Nav has been doing some winemaking in the Clare Valley and has cannily sourced the grapes for this wine from a vineyard with established old vines.  The concentration & richness leaps out of the glass with its purple hued vibrancy of berry spice fruit.  According to Nav, ‘It is all about the aromatics” and the sweetly floral & pure fruit fragrance attests to that.

Wild ferment in open puncheons give that extra dimension & succulent suppleness to the fruit without adding big oak. This is a food friendly wine that you can simply enjoy with company or drink with dinner.

Frankland Estate 2009 Olmo’s Reward

Frankland Estate produces some of my favourite Rieslings, particularly from the Isolation Ridge & Poison Hill vineyards. For those who do not join me in my Riesling fanaticism, do not despair for the Smith Cullam family also produce some very drinkable reds too.

The blend for 2009 is 62% fragrant Cabernet Franc, 17% Merlot, 16% Malbec & Cabernet Sauvignon 5% all from the organic Isolation Ridge Vineyards. Wafts of cinnamon, chocolate, savoury earth, perfumed with some cherry & cedar lift out of the glass to greet you.  Elegantly mediumed bodied, it is silky smooth with soft fruit and some fine tannins.  A wine of poise & texture that is a fine dinner companion today but I would also keep a few languishing in the cellar.

Peterson’s Mudgee 2005 Malbec

Malbec is not a common grape in Australia and it is not often that you will see it unblended, although, in saying that there are probably more Argentine straight Malbecs available than Australian. But this one & a Sparkling version by Peterson’s are both worth Read More

Paracombe 2005 ‘The Reuben’

labelThis is a wine that brings to mind Roast Beef & Yorkshire Puds.  Being a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (14%), Cabernet Franc (12%), Malbec (5%) & Shiraz (5%) nothing about this wine is straight forward except that it is rather tasty and that immediately you taste it you think of food.  Even the Cabernet is not just from a single clone, but from six!

Audrey Wilkinson 2008 Rose

A bright ruby in the glass with distinct salmon hints, this rose has the delicate aroma of strawberry. It is a wine that will go perfectly with the warm afternoon sunshine having a crisp acid and the cherry and strawberry fruit are offset by some savouriness coming from the Shiraz &  Malbec in the blend.  Read More
