Tandem Ars Nova Tempranillo Cabernet Merlot 2005

One of the brands in Spain making modern reds that still have some traditional aged roots such as this blend of the Spanish superstar Tempranillo blended with the Bordeaux greats Cabernet and Merlot.

A rich wine that offers plenty by way of interest in its middle age with dominant tannins, a fuller body and medium length. There are attractive dried rose and tobacco notes to the red plum and fresh red currant fruit. You do get the feeling that you have taken it out of the cellar a tad too early. Drink it with a smoky Paella and enjoy it now it is open.

Tandem Ars Macula Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2004

A Bordeaux style blend of Cabernet Merlot from Navarra in Spain rich with blackcurrant pastille, cedary oak, liquorice, red plum and cinnamon. Mint slice joins the party on your palate and exotic spice pervades the aromas and warms the palate.

The higher alcohol gives the whole experience a lift.  Ripe and chewy, it is a wine that will bring the best out of a lamb tagine.  I would drink it now but you could keep it in the cellar for just another couple of years if you wished.

Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet 2011

Always a tasty generous wine and this vintage is no exception. Sweet red plums, red currants and spicy cinnamon and chocolate are rich and powerful. This is a classic red lovers wine.  Juicy fruit meets spicy oak over fine tannins. A safe bet with or without food, although a steak medium well with plenty of rich mushroom sauce would not go astray here.

Easter – no bunnies here!

After the thrill of Easter eggs and frill of Easter baskets comes the meal to celebrate the spirit of new life.  For some more orthodox religions, this also means the breaking of the fast in a traditional feast with all the trimmings.  Where ever you live, whether Northern or Southern hemisphere the milder weather is welcomed.  Like we just needed another reason to celebrate!

Easter menu’s range from traditional ham, roast pork or lamb with seasonal vegetables to more modern styles.  Don’t forget the seafood/fish feasts for Good Friday (this, I confess, is when we aim to have fish and chips by the beach as a family). Dessert is always the height of anticipation on any celebratory menu and may well be a simnel cake or at least the last slices of it or a simple repast of hot cross buns. These never last long in my house for some reason and perhaps if they did, I would turn them into a bread and butter pudding with a Topaque or Liqueur Muscat sticky caramel sauce.

Whatever your plans, here are a few wine suggestions to make your Easter more memorable …… Read More

Wine of the Month: Houghton Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Is this one of Australia’s forgotten gems? The length and elegance of this wine is there for the taking – and with change for $20. Rich cigar, black currant and red fruit shows some cedary depths that keep evolving in the glass. Powdery tannins give their supple texture to ripe and sweet juicy fruit with drinkability oozing from every well balanced pore. It is elegantly waisted enough not to have to take it to dinner, although it will certainly shine anywhere you go.

And it is good for a second night if you please.  A few wise bottles in the cellar would be a good idea too.
