Frankland Estate 2009 Olmo’s Reward

Frankland Estate produces some of my favourite Rieslings, particularly from the Isolation Ridge & Poison Hill vineyards. For those who do not join me in my Riesling fanaticism, do not despair for the Smith Cullam family also produce some very drinkable reds too.

The blend for 2009 is 62% fragrant Cabernet Franc, 17% Merlot, 16% Malbec & Cabernet Sauvignon 5% all from the organic Isolation Ridge Vineyards. Wafts of cinnamon, chocolate, savoury earth, perfumed with some cherry & cedar lift out of the glass to greet you.  Elegantly mediumed bodied, it is silky smooth with soft fruit and some fine tannins.  A wine of poise & texture that is a fine dinner companion today but I would also keep a few languishing in the cellar.

Rymill MC2 2009

I have seen this wine develop from strength to strength & it is developing quite a following. So much so that it even has its very own website! The MC2 stands for Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and is a food friendly wine with a definite savoury personality. I love the fact that Sandrine Gimon loves to make sure that this wine remains food friendly by personally testing each potential blend with dinner to see which works the best.

The 2009 vintage is cedary with cherry, spice & savoury herbs. It is as always a food friendly medium bodied, moderate alcohol.  This vintage still has some grippy tannins along the fresh berry fruited long length. Even in the middle of a long arduous red tasting, this wine’s length lingers. It is a very well priced mid week wine that will satisfy the fussiest wine drinker while providing enough interest to keep everyone talking.  Do check out the website as there is some great recipes there to be shared as well!

Leabrook Estate 2006 Cabernet Franc

Leabrook Estate, based in Lenswood in Adelaide Hills, is a winery on my bucket list.  I might even create a special wine trail for Cabernet Franc because as a varietal it seems to sing in the Adelaide Hills – fragrant & sweetly ripe.

Rich with sweet black fruit, cedar, tobacco & spice.  Elegantly bodied with a supple length, this is a wine that will accompany that roast rack of lamb that you are planning or perhaps a venison pie.

Leabrook have moved to the 2007 vintage now but there may be some 2006 still around the traps.

Paracombe 2006 Cabernet Franc

Paracombe is a family winery in the cool climate Adelaide Hills wine region. A region that is characterised by picturesque rolling hills, often covered in orchards or vineyards. The combination of cool nights and gravelly soils means that the Paracombe vineyards are very low yielding and slow ripening. The result is concentrated wines such as this Cabernet Franc.

While Cabernet Franc is not rare in Australia, it is usually used to blend with Cabernet Sauvignon as it is in the Bordeaux region in France. This wine is a fine example of how good a straight Cabernet Franc can be. While it is often lighter in density than it’s offspring, Cabernet Sauvignon, this Cab Franc is a deep and inviting ruby purple and fuller bodied than you might expect.

Philip Shaw No. 17 Merlot Cabernet Franc Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

PhilipshawNo17The Orange vineyards of Philip Shaw, Koomooloo, are amongst the highest in Australia and it is not just a cool name, it is cool by nature as well. Here Philip Shaw is creating wines that are consistently fresh & distinctive.

This Merlot Cabernets has plenty of plums & spice character & makes a great food wine.  It shows balance and mid palate fruit.
