#WBW71: Rutherglen Estates Shelley’s Block 2009 Marsanne Viognier

The Central & Northern Victoria regions are producing some of the best Rhone style whites in Australia at the moment, namely Marsanne & Roussanne. These varietals provide delightful drinking, usually at a more reasonable price than the more lavish & flamboyant Kiwi SB invaders.

Rutherglen Estates produces two Rhone white blends – the more premium Rennaissance VRM (Viognier, Roussanne & Marsanne) & this deliciously easy drinking version Shelley’s Block made from 70% Marsanne & 30% Viognier.  And it is worth searching out both. Just because this might be the fruitier version, however, it does not mean that it has had less care in its creation.  Untouched by oak & harvested in batches to introduce freshness, interest & complexity with up to 6 months lees contact for a touch of silky creaminess, there is delightful purity in the fruit in this wine.

The result is a fresh & dry wine with floral aromatics of delicate spicy jasmine, citrus & white peach . It has a medium body with some intensely spicy honey to offset the citrus tang on the finish.  I certainly would not be hesitant to enjoy this wine with food … plump Snapper Goujons with a light lemon & coriander mayonnaise drizzle would be sublime… but food is not necessary, friends may be.
