Penfolds Koonunga Hill Seventy Six Shiraz Cabernet 2008

The Seventy Six is a winemaking tribute to the 1976 vintage, the first vintage of Koonunga Hill complete with retro label. It is heartening to see that some of the old Penfolds magic is flowing back to the brand’s sub $20 tiers. Tasting the Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet 2008 side by side with this version leaves the current KH looking a tad lacking. Rich, plush and full bodied with fresh pure red fruit enhanced by floral aromas.   The Seventy Six has the fruit weight and structure for good drinking now but would last quite a few years in the cellar.
Date: March 2010   Price: $20     Value: $$$      Drink: Now – 5+ years
