Paxton The Vale Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

The Paxton family have adopted biodynamic principles when making their wines and were the first Australian wine company to join 1% For The Planet (giving 1% of their sales to fund environmental causes). Therefore, there is lots to love about The Vale besides the wine – it is better for the environment.

Getting back to the wine, it is ripe, full of flavour and pure fruit.  There is perfumed liquorice, mint and molasses, mulberry & cassis and cloves and vanilla. The palate is round with finely grained tannins making it a well balanced wine that is generous of spirit (without being too generous of ‘spirit’ being a more moderate 14%).   While not quite full bodied, it certainly leaves an impression in its wake.

Gemtree Vineyards Luna Roja Tempranillo 2010

The story of Luna Roja is the story of Spain meets McLaren Vale.  Gemtree is the Buttery family’s biodynamic vineyard in the McLaren Vale and this tempranillo is full of character and texture.  The nose of dried rose petals, sweet exotic spice and red plums is very attractive.

Very silky, juicy and so elegantly supple and medium body and long finish.  Give some breathing space and it will reward you. Step up and see what a great food wine looks like although it is also seriously delicious without food.

d’Arenberg High Trellis Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

A big red lover’s wine from Chester Osborn and his team that has all the hallmarks of quaffability. Richly ripe blackcurrant, liquorice, and earthy choc mint a-plenty.  The High Trellis is fuller in body with a sweet generous length that finishes with a lick of heat.  The fine grainy tannins are approachable now but will also smooth out with mid term cellaring.  Traditional English Sunday lunch with all the trimmings would be a good accompaniment with this wine.

d’Arenberg Footbolt Shiraz 2009

The Osborn family are known for their eclectic range of interesting wine and the matching labels that is d’Arenberg. They are also known for their Shiraz. Scents of fresh picked sun warmed berrys, eucalypt, pepper and cinnamon toast are like a greeting from an old friend. There is elegance to the body and the round soft fruit has more of a savoury olive edge to it on the palate. Footbolt certainly delivers.

Wine of the Month: Wirra Wirra Mrs Wigley Grenache Rose 2012

Let the Rosé Revolution begin!

There is something very endearing about the Mrs Wigley range from Wirra Wirra and I, and I can hear kazillion hairs going up on end right about now, am not a cat lover! Animal loving wine-makers have often come up with wines to celebrate their pets but Wirra Wirra have done this range well and subtley.

I also might point out that on the bottle it states that standard drink calculation is qualified as being at ‘sea level’ just in case you are about to take it for drinking sky high on an alp somewhere.  Love the precision. I first came across the fabulous rosé Mrs W Moscato on Wine Diva when it appeared on a food and wine match. However, I am glad that when the team decided to extend the range that they did make their Grenache Rose in the drier style. When I outed it at a recent BBQ, Mrs Wigley beguiled both sexes and willingly companions.

Deeper pink rosé in colour, indulgently ripe strawberries dominate and a drop of bubblegum musk just for added fun.  You know the first flush of spring strawberries to be more precise. Although there is a pinch of cloves to the berries on the palate. It is elegantly weighted, soft and juicy with a generous length. Mrs Wigley is a pretty wine that has foodability appeal but is a delight on its own.
