Brands Laira Vineyard Shiraz 2009

Brand’s is one of the Coonawarra’s heritage wine labels although no longer owned by the Brand family. It is now owned by the McWilliam family who are working hard to keep the heritage of the label intact. Originally, the vineyard was called Laira after the first owner’s, Captain Stentiford’s ship.

This rich and plump shiraz serves up fresh black fruit, with lashings of banoffee tart oak and a hint of garden herbs. A smooth and elegant, early drinking style of red. Bring on your roast beef with all the trimmings and don’t skimp on the gravy.

Wynns Black label Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Wynn’s can almost be considered synonymous with Coonawarra.  It is one of the regions historic wineries producing a range of wines that have approachable at their heart with the best still being bright and lively decades on.

A rich and thickly concentrated classic that offers up a core of cassis wrapped with some mint and cedar. A big bold style of Cabernet Sauvignon that seems to be bordering on overripe but is still has the freshness to carry it off.  The fruit is supported by skillful use of oak that supports but does not dominate. Drink now with a big juicy steak or it is a good candidate for 5 – 10 years in the cellar.

Jim Barry Cover Drive Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

With its distinctive striped top it is a bottle that is easy to find on the shelf.  The Cover Drive is a blend of both Coonawarra and Clare Valley fruit. A big hearted red with softness at its core. The cassis is lifted with some red fruit and chocolate and the fruit is ripe, plush and generous. A good drop regardless of whether you are a cricket fiend and definitely should be a wine that you enjoy while kicking back.

Majella 2008 ‘The Malleea’

Mention Majella Wines and the Coonawarra comes to mind and with it Brian Lynn’s larger than life personality. The Lynn family focus on producing a classic regional selection of wines that consistently deliver excellent quality for their price. Being their flagship wine, The Malleea celebrates the exquisite marriage of older vine Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon and shiraz.  Only the best for this wine and there should be at least a couple in everyone’s cellar.

Rich with ripe blackcurrants and plums with some milk chocolate & savoury spice overtones. The richness pulls back from full body, leaving The Malleea with smooth elegance from the generous mid palate to the long length. It is evocative of nights of meaningful conversation in front of a fireplace. That smoothness makes for enjoyable drinking now but it will continue to develop personality over time.

Majella 2010 Musician Shiraz Cabernet

Majella is probably better known for their bigger reds, namely their excellent straight Cabernet Sauvignon & Shiraz & this wines bigger sibling – ‘The Malleea’.  However, after the first glass, this eminently drinkable blend of the two will start to make a regular appearance on your table.  Being one of the leading producers of the Coonawarra, this wine does the region proud delivering a medium bodied wine abundant juicy fruit & supple tannins.

The soft fruit is vibrant & irresistible with very little apparent oak to detract from the blackberry fruit. It is a food friendly red with plenty to offer at a remarkable sub $20 price.
