App Musing: Hunter Valley Wine Tour (FREE)

This is a handy little app for people travelling to the Hunter who are unfamiliar with the region or looking for something a little different.  It is a free app, which means that you need to expect that it is a little limited in its coverage of selections.  But even so, there is enough in there to keep the whole family entertained for a day in the Hunter covering many of the main wineries & sites of the regions.

There is even a Hunter Valley Weddings Route, albeit with only a few venues at this moment, that means that you can be on the lookout for that special venue for any event while you are touring the valley.

You can choose to have the tours delivered to your device either via a list/route or plotted for you on a map.  Most businesses listed can be linked to within the app which is nice for me with my old 3G – means that I don’t have to keep going in & out of the app.

Some of the tours are:

  • Local Wine Country Artisans – to find some of the regions non-vinous cultural attractions.
  • Tour de Lovedale tour covers many Lovedale wineries such as Capercaillie, Allandale, Tatler Wines, Gartleman & Wandin Valley Estate.
  • Wine Country with Kids – This is a good selection of kids activities to keep the small people happy.

The app also has the options of reviewing lists such as the James Halliday 5 star wineries, art exhibitions, cafes, restaurants, wedding venues & lists some of the major events of the region.

A nice feature is the ability to stream or download the tours meaning that they will be available even when reception is dodgy, which it often can be in the Hunter.   The app also has a link to an accommodation booking service so you can organise your accommodation for your trip on the fly, just in case you to have decided to extend your stay.

This app is easy & intuitive to use. I would like to see more listings but there is plenty of good pickings there already.  It is certainly a useful app for the first time visitor to the Hunter & I really like the fact that it is available on Android too.

App Musing: Good Wine Guide 2011

Many Australian’s would be familiar with the book form of Nick Stock’s the Good Wine Guide.  This app was released in January 2011 at $9.99 and has recently been dropped down to $4.49, the next edition of the book due just before Christmas.  It has some great features & is easy to use to find your wine out of the 1200+ reviewed & scored as per the book.  The wines are all current releases with no back vintages included & mostly Australian wine with just a smattering of imports albeit a good representation of Champagne.
