Shaw & Smith have quite a reputation for their Sauvignon Blanc and after just a sip of this wine it is obvious why they are one of the benchmarks for Australian SB. The vineyard was planted after being ravaged by the Ash Wednesday bushfires and Kathy and Paul Drogemuller have a determined hands-on approach to create individual wines that truly qualify as ‘little gems’. There is some creaminess coming from lees with soft stonefruit characters pepped up with some lemon and Like That is Castle Rock Estate from Porongurup in the Western Australian region of Great Southern not to be confused with Castle Rock Winery in California. Not that you could confuse it for anything but Sauvignon Blanc. A pretty, delicate and elegant Sauvignon Blanc. The aromas Like Yeah, Cloudy Bay is still a tad cultish but I just had to try it as I had not tasted this Savvy B for quite a while… maybe the last time was when I pulled out a bottle of 2001 that was mouldering in the cellar for 5 years and it surprised me how fresh it [...] The Margaret River, home to the Clairault winery, is recognised as having a similar climate to the Bordeaux region in France, home to the Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc grape varieties. It makes sense then, that this region produces some very drinkable Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blends indeed. Maturing 50% of the wine in oak has produced a lovely well rounded wine with an extra something.
